You just want to shoot an erotic horror film in the Jura pampas, far away from modern civilisation, and then this happens: the actors turn into zombies, the locations collapse, and then the director disappears and is found on the other side, in Mexico, as an embalmed corpse. An inspector is supposed to bring light into the jungle – one who seems to come straight out of a gay hardcore porno. Does that sound strange? It is, and one of the most original, imaginative and stimulating films of the year. Valentin Merz, lead actor from the Berlinale hit “Unrest”, has made an immoderate, polymorphously perverse horror-post-punk comedy with a sexually very diverse and international team. A film on the edge between reality and appearance that sets new standards for queer filmmaking. The film features many familiar faces from the Berlin scene, such as Bishop Black. Our discovery from the Rotterdam Film Festival! Here cinema becomes sexual practice!

LAS ART FOUNDATION presents UKI by Shu Lea Cheang in Berlin.

UKI, the new film by Taiwanese-US artist Shu Lea Cheang, celebrated its world premiere at Filmfest München on June 29, 2023. Now follows the Berlin premiere on July 21 and 22 at Kranzler Eck and on September 7 at Kino Moviemento.

Tickets for Juli 21 and 22, 2023

Tickets for September 7, 2023, 21:00

In UKI, Reiko – a discarded sex worker and replicant – finds herself in a landfill for electronic waste in the year 2060. Discarded – having become obsolete as an orgasm data collector – Reiko tries to regain control over her own hard drive body, which glitches and takes on new forms. Eventually, Reiko transforms into a virus to save the planet from the ruthless plans of a biotech company.

What sounds wild is wild! 1950s commercials, images by de Chirico, Hopper, Soylent Green, “The Fantastic Voyage”, Corona… Shu Lea Cheang draws on a wealth of inspiration to create an exciting, polysexual, gender fluid film of extraordinary visuality. From 3-D graphics to cinematic mise-en-scène generated with game engines to live-action scenes enriched with visual effects, the filmmaker uses all forms of contemporary digital cinematography. UKI is a beguiling viewing experience – a film for the 21st century! “UKI” was conceived in 2009 as a sequel to Shu Lea Cheang’s “I.K.U.,” a sci-fi cyberpunk film that screened at the 2000 Sundance Film Festival.

The two-day screening and event program at Bilka im Kranzler-Eck extends the cinematic world of UKI through installations, sound and live performances by artists who contributed significantly to the film.

The LAS Art Foundation is a Berlin-based art platform at the intersection of art, technology and science. With experimental projects in unconventional locations, both in digital and physical space, LAS Art Foundation continues to explore innovative forms of exhibition practice.
