La Revolución de las Musas (The Revolution of the Muses)

Film program, ES 2023, 62 min., span./cata./ital.+ engl. UT

By: Mar Nantas, Juno Alvarez, Yaiza de Lamo

With: Violeta Rodriguez, Albert Pla, Josep Julien, Laura Corbacho, Gonzalo Ramos, Yolanda Sey Asare

The Revolution of the Muses explores the forgotten role of muses in Western art history, reclaiming the voices of the women whose bodies and identities shaped some of its most iconic works. Clio is the muse, the model, and the sex worker – immortalized on museum walls but often erased from history. Through her encounters with artists such as Pablo Ruíz, Charles Baudelaire, and Cardinal Borghese, the film challenges the myth of the male artistic genius and exposes the power dynamics behind artistic creation.

Blending documentary, fiction, and personal experience, the film moves between past and present through Violeta, the actress portraying Clio, and director Mar Nantas. It’s an invitation to a reexamination of art history, recognizing muses as co-creators and questioning the inequalities that continue to shape the art world today.
