Carnival season in Argentina is initiated by the gauchos with the “Ritual of Flesh”.

“El Fulgor” describes the contrasts of this preparatory phase and those of its protagonists. Using artificial images – sometimes in black and white, sometimes in color – it shows different facets of masculinity. Alternating between close ups of bodies and tableau-like landscape totals, the film reveals the contrast between vulnerability and ritualized masculinity, violence and desire, as well as machismo and homoeroticism. In combination with a subtly swelling and waning sound collage, director Martín Farina creates a poetically powerful and visually impressive emotional panorama.
