“El Triunfo de Sodoma” (“The Triumph of Sodom”) by Goyo Anchou, Argentina &
“Autlo” (“Outlaw”) by Ksenia Ratushnaya, Russian Federation

Jury motivation:

We decided to split the price between two films which talk about similar fights in their own ways. They share a radical honesty about the situation in their countries, the oppression and suffering it causes within marginalized beings. Through using their own very specific visual language, they pull the viewers into the heart of the storm.

“Rebel Dykes” by Harri Shanahan & Siân A. Williams, UK

Jury motivation:

“Rebel Dykes” tells the yet untold history of a sub-subculture: rebellious, sex-positive and nonconformist lesbians whose invisibility is finally over thanks to this film. Thoroughly researched and made with lots of love and creativity this documentary is a milestone in the preservation of LGBT history.

Best Short Film 2021

Jury: Ben Berlin, Candy Flip, Nicky Miller

Award sponsor: Erotic Lounge

“Fuck the Fascism: El Cruce de dos Mundos” (“Fuck the Fascism: The Crossroads of Two Worlds” by Maria Basura, Chile/Spain

Jury motivation:

The short film merely marks a preliminary result of a process that has been going on for years, regarding the decolonization of bodies. The artist explains how colonial power structures are still taking their brutal effect today – and she attacks this in her own way: irreverent and humorous, based on historical facts and at the same time highly topical. In strong, sensuous scenes she picks up the element of violence and turns it into a narrative of empowerment. The filmmaker has been attacking the monuments of colonialism well before monuments were toppled worldwide – and her untamed energy won’t be stopped in the future.

Sex & Age Film Award 2021

Jury: J. Jackie Baier, Jürgen Brüning, Wieland Speck

Award sponsor: J. Brüning Filmproduktion

“Morgana” by Josie Hess & Isabel Peppard, Australia

Jury motivation:

Morgana shows us an act of liberation in the middle of life. She uses pornography, the most personal of all art forms, to deprogram herself from the cliched roles of housewife and mother. Instead of quietly and graciously disappearing, Morgana pulls her pants down.

Honorable Mention “Ausgeblutet” (“Bled Out”) by Pauline Curnier Jardin, Germany

Jury motivation:

What remains of sexuality in old age is longing… and a metaphorical trail of blood.

BIPoC Film Award 2021

Jury: Maria Basura, Popo Fan, Jasco Viefhues

Award sponsor: Erika Lust Films

“Tatami” by Katie Kinako, Japan

Jury motivation:

This film takes us to an intersectional view of pornography. With the director’s female gaze on gay holes and male vulnerability, this film is questioning and transgressing heteronormative power dynamics in Japanese erotic heritage. The director’s choice to frame this kinky story mostly in one wide shot, always from the same perspective is reflecting on Asian cinematic tradition in contemporary BDSM exploration. This film also extends humor from very disciplined desire and adds another layer to camp culture.

Fetish Award 2021

Jury: Jordan Firstman, Sean Ford, Juliana Huxtable, Rebecca Moore, Billy Vega, XLTop

Award sponsor: VITIUM

“Hold” by Marit Östberg, Sweden

Jury motivation:

“Hold” is a fresh and honest take on a genre that we’re so programmed to perceive in a certain way. Its casting, sound and cinematography all giving the film something tangibly intimate and real. Through the juxtapositions of different ways of ‘holding’ one another – the BDSM space became one that’s more universal and accessible.
