United in Anger – A History of ACT UP
Retrospective, US 2012, 94 min., engl. OV + dt. UT
By: Jim Hubbard
“United in Anger” tells the story of a small group of men and women from different social and ethnic backgrounds who, in the midst of the AIDS pandemic of the 1980s, came together to form the activist group ACT UP (AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power) to save each other’s lives. Director Jim Hubbard collages the numerous eyewitness accounts from the ACT UP Oral History Archive. The film throws viewers right into the planning and execution of ACT UP’s legendary Civil Disobedience actions that forced the U.S. government and mainstream media to confront the HIV/AIDS crisis. It also reveals the complex culture of the group, whose co-founder Larry Kramer died in May 2020 at the age of 85. Group meetings and the elaborate actions express grief, sexuality, solidarity and the incredible energy that drove ACT UP.
