Limiar (Threshold)
Film program, BR 2020, 77 min., port. OV + engl. UT
By: Coraci Ruiz
When Coraci Ruiz, a convinced feminist of the second generation, learns that her teenage child is not comfortable in their ascribed gender role and seeks her legal consent to transition, she picks up the camera, both as filmmaker and worried mother. Between 2016 and 2019 she interviews her son about his ideas, wishes and uncertainties in his process of gender confirmation. The result is an autobiographical, intimate and self-reflective film about conflicts in a mother-child relationship, about approaches, differences and unspoken insecurities. Similar to the transition her son is going through, Ruiz is going through a process of transformation in which she confronts her fears, breaks old paradigms and deconstructs prejudices.
