Buddies
Retrospective, US 1985, 81 min., engl. OV + dt. UT
By: Arthur J. Bressan, Jr.
With: Robert Willow, David Schachter
Summer 1985 in New York. 25-year-old gay typesetter David wants to do something about the HIV/AIDS pandemic and volunteers to join a community program that places “buddies“ with people affected by HIV. This is how he meets 32-year-old activist Robert, who has been abandoned by his partner and friends after he fell ill. In a small hospital room, the two young men talk about their lives, the right attitude towards being gay, passionate sex and the fear of death. Then Robert’s condition deteriorates rapidly. Bressan’s film is the first feature film ever about HIV/AIDS, a masterpiece of queer cinema, a deeply touching study of life and death – and a timeless document of gay solidarity.
