Ein Virus kennt keine Moral (A Virus Knows No Morals)

Retrospective, DE 1986, 82 min., dt. OV + engl. UT

By: Rosa von Praunheim

With: Dieter Dicken, Maria Hasenäcker, Christian Kesten, Eva Kurz, Rosa von Praunheim, Thilo von Trotha

A reactionary sauna owner whose boyfriend studies theology and sings Bach’s choirs, a therapist who teaches death meditation and gymnastics to AIDS patients, a reporter who dresses up as a man and spies on the gay and HIV/AIDS scene, a Professor Doctor Blut who catches the virus in Africa, a minister with false promises, rich queers and gay revolutionaries are the main characters in the first German feature film about HIV/AIDS. A black comedy whose main actors are the homosexuals and transvestites of Berlin that satirically traces the first phases of panic. The film encircles the topic of HIV/AIDS with garish ideas and a somewhat macabre sweeping blow. At a dreary drag ball, the gay band Bermudas sings “Hooray, we are still alive”. In the end, everyone has AIDS while the night nurses roll the dice to see who will die first. Black humor as an act of furious provocation.
