(No Box for Me. An Intersex Story)

How do you live with a secret? How do you live with genitalia that have been selected for you by others during infancy and operated on in such a way that shortly after birth the conform to the norms? How do you construct your own identity under these conditions? M. is 27 years old and lives in France, where intersexuality is still treated as a disease that needs to be treated and repaired. In order to escape this taboo part of her biography and identity, M. makes contact with Deborah, who herself is intersexual from birth and collects personal reports for her dissertation within the framework of gender studies. The film uses both biographies to reflect on how intersexual people try to reconstruct their bodies and identities, and criticizes those social norms that still force them into narrow binary boundaries.
