From pushy bottoms to macho femmes, Michelle Handelman‘s “BloodSisters” is a documentary inventory of the lesbian leather scene in San Francisco in the mid-1990s. Eight women, who define themselves as leather dykes, tell their individual stories from the heart of a subculture within a subculture that is viewed with suspicion even within the lesbian community. Seen by some as traitors to the common cause, the Leather Dykes are indeed the queerest of the queer, and this film proudly portrays them. Attacked in the American Congress by the conservative American Family Association for its representations of radical lesbian sexuality, “BloodSisters” shows a complex, highly reflective community and expands the discussion of private expressions of eroticism and its political implications – between S&M slave auctions and activist events.
