Horror cinema is, in essence, a cinema of sensations. Along with melodrama and pornography, it integrates what some authors call “body genres”, cinematographic genres whose visuality enhances excitement and stimulation in the viewer’s body, producing visceral reactions that escape our control ‑ an invitation to the sensorial. What this debut feature of Mexican filmmaker Emiliano Rocha Minter does, however, is take us out of any comfort zone and forces us to feel. Unlike most horror films, WE ARE THE FLESH explores genre codes ‑ especially through the excruciating sound, which makes it an uncomfortable and intriguing experience especially when incest, rape, cannibalism and bloodshed in a womb-like dark cave are added.
