It’s well known that stress and suffering at the moment of slaughter interfere with meat’s quality. A happy, well-maintained animal produces a much softer and more palatable meat, while livestock that experienced pain is often much harder to eat. If orgasm is considered the peak of extreme happiness, a “petite mort” as the French say, what would the quality of flesh be at this most joyest of moments? This is the perverse logic that guides the characters of CANNIBAL CLUB. A departure from director Guto Parente’s previous works, it is a much more explicit dialogue with horror, in what seems like an attempt towards a more mainstream production ‑ although popular is not exactly the best word to describe a film in which we accompany a powerful rich couple belonging to a secret club where the main dish served is the meat of their black employees.
