With: Linn Da Quebrada
BIXA TRAVESTY is an audiovisual treatise on gender and Linn da Quebrada is the powerful voice of the Global South, echoed by so many other voices that cinema has historically relegated to silence. The black trans artist from the favela drives this documentary herself and does it through her own body, which is at the same time a working tool, an art form and territory of resistance, but the film also embraces a subject who desires affection and love. We follow the Brazilian singer’s artistic trajectory, live shows and intimate moments with friends and family, but it’s Linn who determines the film’s pace and the issues raised by it. It extrapolates the limits of biographical documentary by designing an essay on gender and sexuality that comes from within. It’s no wonder that one of the chosen sources for the film is a radio chat in which Linn and her friend Jup do Bairro talk to the public in a didactic but not obvious way about topics like feminism, transphobia, sex, favela culture and Brazilian queer music.
